cover photo of the book Higher Than Everest - Tendi Sherpa: A Lifetime of Climbing the World by Flore Dussey

Description

Higher than Everest is an uncompromising portrait of Tendi Sherpa, a 39-year-old father of two who was one of the first fully qualified mountain guides in Nepal. From humble beginnings – he had his first pair
of shoes aged 13 – Tendi embodies the new generation of Sherpas who are taking their destiny into their own hands.

While some of his fellow Sherpas look to set records on summits higher than 8,000m, such as the fastest ascent or number of peaks climbed in a minimum time frame, Tendi concentrates on sharing his love and respect for the mountain environment, doing his utmost to make each expedition a life-enhancing experience for the climbers he guides. What’s more, he is not afraid to denounce the over-commercialisation of Everest and the overcrowding seen on several sacred Himalayan peaks.

He has achieved hero status by providing assistance to all sorts of mountaineers in great difficulties in the ‘Death Zone’ (above 8,000m) and elsewhere during ascents and descents.

Once a child monk, Tendi retains a deep attachment to Buddhism and its rituals. Looking steadfastly towards the future, but respecting ancient traditions and never forgetting where his has come from, he regularly returns to the remote Valley of Khembalung, the land of his ancestors.
